Omisaka

In Japan, we call Dec. 31 "Omisoka." Many families clean their houses before Dec. 31. Because clean houses give us a good feeling. We can meet a new year with a fresh feeling. And on the night of Dec. 31 we eat "toshikoshi-soba." This means "We can live sharp and long like soba." And, when the new year dawns, some people go to "hatsumoude." It is a traditional event that we pray for health, study and love etc... Foreign countries are lively and cheerful on the New Year's Day. For example, they enjoy fireworks. In contrast, it is silent and slow in Japan.

I remember in the western world Dec. 31 is called New Year's Eve.

The tradition in Taiwan is very similar to Japan. We also clean our houses before Chinese New Year's Eve, and we will have our family members to get together for the dinner and have fireworks in the evening of the day.

This year the Chinese New Year's Eve is at Jan. 28. If you have time, maybe you can come to Taiwan and know about Taiwan's Chinese New Year. :)

Happy New Year, and have a nice day.

Best regards,
H.T.

Hi Summer Eyes!!!
So Summer should be your first and Eyes should be your last name!!
Good!!! I like it!!
Anyway ,in Turkey for some people it's so important how they spend the New Year Eve(DEC.31)because they believe that whole year they will be in that mood.Let's say they have a party and have fun in new year eve ,this means they will be happy and have fun during the new year.If they are not in a good mood in new year eve, they believe this will affect their whole year in a bad way and they will be sad in that year.
This is a superstition.I don't believe such things.
By the way I wish you a happy new year!!
Bye!

Hi Summer Eyes,
Dec 31 is not called Omisoka in my country (Philippines), but most of us Filipinos clean the house. Old people believe that it is good to welcome the New Year with a clean house.
In Cambodia (where I am working at present), the New Year is celebrated in the month of April, according to the Buddhist calendar. They also clean the house, offer food to their dead ancestors and pray in the temples for a good year.
It is interesting to see some similarities in traditions and culture, don't you think so?

Dear Summer Eyes,
Just three weeks ago, I enjoyed all of the New Year's customs that you described. It is a very nice experience to be a visitor in your country and to participate in some special customs and rituals. I hope that some day you will be able to travel to other countries and experience similar celebrations there.

Hi Summer Eyes,

Thank you for explaining that there's fireworks during the summer festival. Since I'm not familiar with this celebration, could you please tell me more about the summer festival?

Thank you!
